The Preble County Genealogical Society will meet on the following dates: February 4 (tentative) We will view a DVD documentary about a man who tries to discover his ancestors. His search for his roots includes those of both black and white racial groups with the Alston surname. Come ready for a relaxing afternoon watching someone else working on his family tree! April 7 Members and friends will travel to the Friends' Collection at Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. The librarians will give us a short orientation to the collection and then allow us time to research. Since we need to be at the library at about 1:00, we will have a short business meeting at the LARC at 12:30 and then we will car-pool to Richmond. We will not be returning until about 4:00. June 2 "The History of the V. A. in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio". The speaker from the Veterans' Administration will give us the history of the VA in Dayton. Many interesting tidbits will be discovered during this presentation. The presentation will begin at 2:00 and the short business meeting will follow. Members are asked to bring snacks. June 4 Members and friends will meet at the LARC at 9:00 and travel to the Springlawn Cemetery in New Paris to continue, and hopefully finish, reading the markers in the old section. This has been a project our society has been working on for several years. At about noon, we will travel to a downtown restaurant for our lunch. Remember to bring soft-bristle brushes, water in spray bottles, and heavy-duty aluminum foil. August 6 Members will meet at the LARC and car-pool to the Allen County Public Library in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. We will make a stop for a short break on the way there and will stop on the way back for dinner and our meeting. You may visit several of the restaurants in the area for lunch. Bring plenty of change for the copiers! Also, check out the catalog beforehand (on the Internet) so that you will have an idea of those items you don't want to miss. October 6 Cathy Nelson of the Ohio Humanities Council will give a presentation entitled "A History of the Underground Railroad". This program is a joint venture with the Preble County District Library. Cathy Nelson is founder and president emeritus of the Friends of Freedom Society, which is focused on the Underground Railroad. Learn about the history of the Underground Railroad and about some of the particular stations throughout Ohio (several of which are in our geographical area). Members are asked to bring snacks for a larger group since we may have more visitors than usual. December 1 We will have the induction ceremony for First Families and Settlers & Builders. If you think you qualify, ask for an application. We would like to add your name to our plaques. Members are asked to bring snacks. The meetings will begin at 2:00 P.M., EST, and will be held at the Preble County District Library Administration and Resource Center, 450 South Barron Street, Eaton, Ohio. Trips to out of town locations will car pool from the same location. As always, the society meetings are free and open to the public. |
