Meeting Schedule for 2013 |

The Preble County Genealogical Society will meet on the following dates: Saturday, February 2 Members will meet at the LARC at 2:00 pm. Carol Montrose will speak on “County Commissioner and Township Records”. Carol has over 30 years experience in genealogical research and speaking engagements for many genealogical societies, seminars, and workshops. She is also an author and publisher of numerous genealogy resources and a Web-master for Ohio Gen-Web genealogy sites; Carol has also served as Chair of the National Genealogical Society CIG. She will bring along the books she has authored so that members and friends may purchase them if so desired. Members should bring snacks to this meeting. Saturday, April 6 Members will meet at the LARC at 2:00 pm. Carol Montrose, our speaker from the February meeting, will be the speaker again; at this meeting Carol will speak on “Hidden Information in the Recorder’s Office”. She will bring along the books she has authored so that members and friends may purchase them if so desired. Members should bring snacks to this meeting. Monday, June 3 Members will meet at the LARC to car-pool at 9:00 am to travel to the Cincinnati History Library and Archives at the Museum Center (used to be the old Union Terminal) in Cincinnati, Ohio. M’Lissa Kesterman will meet us at 10:00 and give us a 2-hour workshop on how to use the library’s collection of sources that are online, the photo collection, newspapers, ephemera, maps, and the manuscript materials. This workshop is a free workshop M’Lissa has given to other societies in the area. Members will then go to the mezzanine for lunch and the Society’s business meeting. Members may bring their lunch or purchase pizza or sandwiches from the serving places in the museum center. After lunch and the business meeting, members may stay to research on their own if they so desire. Monday, August 5 Members will meet at the LARC at 7:30 am to car-pool to the Allen County Public Library in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. We will make a stop for a short break on the way there at McDonald’s in Portland and will stop on the way back for dinner and our business meeting. You may visit several of the restaurants in the area for lunch. Bring plenty of change for the copiers! Also, check out the online catalog beforehand so that you will have an idea of those items you don't want to miss. Saturday, October 5 This program is co-sponsored with the Preble County Room (through the Preble County District Library) and the Preble County Genealogical Society. Mark Holbrook from the Ohio Humanities Council will present "Billy Yank: The Life of a Soldier." In this program, Mark will take on the persona of an Ohio soldier in the Civil War. You will learn about a soldier's life in camp and in battles, what the soldiers ate, and even how they survived four years of war. This first-person portrayal will be entertaining as well as educational. Saturday, December 7 Members will meet at the LARC at 2:00 pm. We will have the induction ceremony for First Families, Settlers & Builders, and Century Families of Preble County, Ohio. If you think you qualify, ask for an application. We would like to add your name to our plaques. Members are asked to bring snacks.
The meetings will begin at 2:00 P.M., EST, and will be held at the Preble County District Library Administration and Resource Center, 450 South Barron Street, Eaton, Ohio. Trips to out of town locations will car pool from the same location As always, the society meetings are free and open to the public. |
